Pacers & Racers Running and Walking Store Walking: Where to Walk

Southern Indiana and Louisville have many excellent places to walk for fun and fitness, including paved, miles-long paths along both sides of the river, numerous suburban and rural parks and at least half a dozen major shopping malls for indoor exercise.

Southern Indiana

  • Charlestown State Park- Charlestown.
  • Community Park- New Albany.
  • Deam Lake- Near Borden.
  • Harrison / Crawford / Wyandotte Park- 8 miles West of Corydon on Hwy. 62.
  • Hayswood Park- Corydon.
  • Henryville National Forest- Henryville.
  • Perrin Park- Jeffersonville.

Louisville

  • Cherokee Park- has a 2.5 mile paved loop with one lane devoted to pedestrian traffic and also numerous trails in a hilly setting.  The park can be easily accessed from Bardstown Road by turning East onto Eastern Parkway.

  • Cox's Park- is located on River Road just east of Zorn Avenue.  A newly constructed paved path leads from the park to the Water Tower on Zorn Avenue.  There is also a newly developed park across River Road from Cox's park.

  • E.P. Tom Sawyer Park- is located on Freys Hill Road in eastern Jefferson County.  Freys Hill Road is just off Westport Road and the Gene Snyder Expressway near the Springhurst Shopping Center.  This park has a one-mile crushed limestone fitness trail, plus a one-mile path through the woods.  There are also ample opportunities to traverse the fields and 5 kilometer cross country course.

  • Iroquois Park-  is located in southern Jefferson County.  This heavily wooded and hilly park can be accessed easily from Southern Parkway.  There is a 3.1 mile road with a pedestrian lane around the bottom of the park, with another road (usually closed to traffic) that leads to the top.

  • River Walk- starts at the wharf in downtown Louisville and proceeds downstream along the river for seven miles and upstream for approximately a mile.  Eventually the River Walk and the path at Cox's park 4-5 miles upstream, will be linked.

  • Seneca Park-  this park adjoins Cherokee Park and is much smaller.  Nonetheless, it definitely sees its share of activity with numerous team sports and hundreds of walkers taking advantage of the 1.2 mile paved loop around the perimeter.  The path is well lit for those winter nights.
